John Lewis Solow, Educator at the University of Iowa, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Economics.

Dr. Solow is a professor of economics and a business research fellow with the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa, and is noted for his work as an economist with the Federal Energy Administration at Washington, DC, in the late ‘70s. His specialties are in industrial organization, sports economics, law and economics, and antitrust matters, and he has been published in scholarly economics journals, including the American Economic Review, Economica, the Journal of Public Economics, and the Southern Economic Journal. He serves as a referee for these and other economics journals. Dr. Solow was featured in the pages of the Who’s Who in the Midwest.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Robert Merton and Barbara Solow, Dr. Solow attended Yale University to earn a BA in 1976, and while working in Washington married Catherine Mary Mitiguy, with whom he had daughter Rebecca Marie and Benjamin Lewis. Dr. Solow returned to academia to earn an MA from Stanford University in 1981, and joined the University of Iowa as an assistant professor while working on a PhD from Stanford. He has been a full professor of the University of Iowa since 2012.

Dr. Solow is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Law and Economics Association and treasurer of the North American Association of Sports Economists. He has been a visiting lecturer or professor at Stanford University and the University of Auckland, and has served as an expert witness in several antitrust matters. Notably, he has collaborated on the “Performance, Expectations, Contracts and Job Security” featured in the “Research Handbook of Employment Relations and Sport,” and is the co-author of “The Demand for Aggressive Behavior in American Stock Car Racing.” In his spare time, Dr. Solow enjoys sailing and travel.
