Carlos Cordon-Cardo, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine.
After 34 years in teaching and medical research, Dr. Cordon-Cardo is now the chair of pathology for one of the largest departments in the U.S., with over nine affiliated hospitals, a residency program with 40 residents and 12 fellows, and the support of over 25 grants that have funded his research. His particular specialty is molecular pathology and molecular oncology, which has earned him a number of investigative awards and inclusion in the pages of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the East.
Dr. Cordon-Cardo has enjoyed research ever since he built a lab in his childhood home at age ten, clustered around a microscope given to him by his grandmother. He was motivated to attend the Unversitat de Barcelona, where he earned a doctorate in 1980. Dr. Cordon-Cardo was certified in Madrid, and traveled to the U.S. as a special immunopathology fellow of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Cornell University. He earned a PhD in cell biology and genetics from Cornell in 1985, and worked with the institutions through the ‘90s. He later earned an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the Universitat de Barcelona.
Dr. Cordon-Cardo has been a member of numerous medical committees, notably with the American Association for Cancer Research and as president of the solid tumor chapter of the Association for Molecular Pathology. He is the recipient of numerous awards, notably a 1991 Louise and Alliston Boyer Young Investigator Award from Sloan-Kettering, as well as a Gold Medal recipient of the Swedish Medical Association and the Govierno de Galicia. He holds 14 patents, and is a major contributor to medical journals as well as American and international medical societies. Dr. Cordon-Cardo is the proud father of Carolina and Daniel with his wife Alicia Bouzan. He enjoys studying, music, and soccer.
