In 1957 Dr. Chelapati arrived in America, where he joined the department of civil engineering at the University of Illinois as a research assistant. He earned an MS there in 1959, followed by a PhD in 1962. Upon earning a doctorate, Dr. Chelapati moved to California, where he was welcomed by California State University, Long Beach, as an assistant professor of engineering. He became chairman of his department in 1973, and coordinated professional engineering review programs for the university until 1981. Toward the end of his time there, Dr. Chelapati became director of continuing engineering education from 1982 to 1996, and director of the CADDS Research Center as well. He maintained his engineering firm C.V. Chelapati and Associates from 1979 to 2001.
